Richard CW Martin
Surgeon

Richard is a New Zealand trained General Surgeon who spent two and a half years at the Sydney Cancer Center specialising in Melanoma and Head and Neck surgery. Most of his time was spent at the Sydney Melanoma Unit, the largest treatment and research facility for Melanoma in the world.
During his time in Sydney he completed a Master of Surgery in Surgical Oncology at the University of Sydney. As a Surgical Oncologist Richard assesses and treats all forms of Melanoma.
Richard has published in numerous academic journals, is a regular presenter at international conferences and is actively involved in research and clinical trials. Richard’s aim is to improve the treatment of Melanoma in New Zealand through world class clinical care and research.
Richard is part of the Waitemata Melanoma Unit team and can see tertiary referral public cases at Northshore Hospital, he also works for the Auckland Regional Head and Neck Service.
Private patients are seen at the Melanoma Unit (Northshore), Rodney Surgical Centre (Warkworth) or Henderson Medical Centre(West Auckland).

Richard Harman
Surgeon
BSc MBChB FRACS
Richard is an experience surgeon with a strong interest in cancer surgery. He completed a fellowship at the Sydney Melanoma Unit and maintains a close link with them. Richard is a founding member of the Melanoma Foundation of New Zealand www.melanoma.org.nz and also MELNET.
Richard initiated Melanoma research at Waitemata District Health Board which gives patients the option of being considered for newer types of treatment. He is also part of the multidisciplinary melanoma team at Waitemata and has extensive experience with melanoma surgery- primary excision, flap closure and skin graft-sentinel node biopsy-lymph node removal (lymphadenectomy) and removal of metastatic disease.

John M Chaplin
Surgeon
MBChB, FRACS
John is a New Zealand trained Head and Neck Surgeon with expertise in the management of metastatic cutaneous malignancy to the parotid gland and neck lymph nodes and in reconstruction of complex defects created by surgery to remove tumours.
John spent one year in fellowship training at the Sydney Cancer Centre Institute and during that time worked with the Sydney Melanoma Unit Head and Neck patients. He did a second fellowship at the Mount Sinai Medical Center in Manhattan, New York City where he trained in microvascular head and neck reconstruction.
John has worked as a head and neck surgeon in Auckland since 1999 and is one of the most experienced surgeons in his field in the country. He treats all forms of head and neck melanoma including primary lesions, sentinel node biopsy and metastatic disease. He is actively involved in research and has published widely in the head and neck literature. John is the director of an international head and neck surgery fellowship based at Auckland City Hospital and is regularly invited to lecture at national and international meetings.

Ashwin Chunilal

Ashwin completed his medical training at Auckland Medical School, and his plastic surgical training at Waikato and Middlemore Hospitals. Following this, he travelled overseas and undertook further fellowship experience including a microvascular clinical Fellowship at the Toronto General Hospital for one year where he focused on breast, head and neck reconstruction as well as facial reanimation. Ashwin also completed a one year Clinical Fellowship at the internationally renowned Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre, specialising in cancer reconstructive surgery. After this, he completed his fellowship experience at the Lotus Institute on Australia’s Gold Coast doing cosmetic surgery.
Since returning to Auckland, Ashwin has taken up a Consultant Plastic Surgeon position with Middlemore Hospital but also operates from North Shore and Auckland City Hospitals on a regular basis. Ashwin has published and presented on various topics related to his field.

Mike Hulme-Moir

Mike Hulme-Moir is a New Zealand trained General Surgeon who, for the past 8 years has worked as a Surgical Consultant at North Shore Hospital/Waitemata Health. Mike’s particular areas of interest lie in the management of all colorectal disease and Melanoma treatment including sentinel node biopsy and intra-abdominal Melanoma problems. Mike is also a member of the Waitemata Melanoma Unit which is actively involved in Melanoma research.

Maria Pears

Dr Maria Pearse is a Consultant (Specialist) Radiation Oncologist and manages radiotherapy treatment at both Auckland Radiation Oncology and at Auckland City Hospital. Dr Pearse trained at Otago University in Dunedin, Auckland City Hospital and the Toronto Sunnybrook Regional Cancer Centre in Canada.
In addition to her clinical roles at ARO and Auckland City Hospital, Dr Pearse is the Chief Pathology Examiner for the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (RANZCR), of which she is a Fellow. This is the examining and accrediting body for the Radiation Oncology specialty.
Dr Pearse is active in the field of cancer research and has a number of international peer-reviewed publications. She is also the recipient of a number of research grants and awards.
Areas of Interest
Dr Pearse has a general interest in oncology including sub-specialty interests in: skin (including melanoma), breast, urology (including prostate and bladder), gastrointestinal (including rectal, oesophageal and pancreatic), lung, prostate brachytherapy and palliative radiation oncology.

Lyn Pearless

Lyn has worked across a variety of nursing disciplines including psychiatric, plastic and bariatric surgery, oncology, gastroenterology, intensive care, and general. Working as a coordinator in the intensive care at North Shore Hospital has provided a good background for the peri-operative requirements of our Melanoma patients.
For the past five years, Lyn has worked alongside fellow NZMU members Michael Hulme-Moir, Richard Harman and Mike McCrystal in treating patients with Melanoma. Lyn aims to provide patients with a clear and informative pathway through their treatment programs and has a strong interest in a multidisciplinary, collaborative model of care. As Lyn is involved in the NZMU’s multidisciplinary meeting, she will be a key driver in providing this type of care for all the unit’s patients. Lyn will also be responsible for the continual auditing of the NZMU’s service provision, with the aim of maintaining a centre of excellence model of care for the NZMU’s patients.

Chris, Sarah and Sandra
Admin Team
Chris, Sarah and Sandra are the admin team at NZMU. Together they have years of experience in managing all aspects of running a busy surgical practice.
Appointment requests, phone call and email enquiries will be managed by Sarah and Sandra from the front reception desk.
Sarah has worked as a Medical Receptionist for 11 years and has been in her current position for the past 5. Sandra joined us 2 years ago from North Shore Hospital, where she worked for 4 years. They make a great team and keep the reception area running very efficiently.
Chris is our Practice Manager, she also has vast experience in the Health Industry having spent 6 years at North Shore Hospital prior to taking up the manager role here 3 years ago. Chris deals with the business side of things, although when things get hectic on reception helps out with appointments and enquiries as well.
